DID YOU KNOW??

If you are a baby turtle, the odds of survival aren’t good!  Only 1 in 1,000 sea turtles survives from hatching to adulthood!  Birds, crabs, dogs, mongoose, and fish eat hatchlings.  So, when one adult turtle dies, its like having thousands and thousands of hatchlings die.

DID YOU KNOW??

Hatchling sea turtles find their way to the sea by moving towards the brightest light, which usually they think is reflection of the moon or stars on the ocean.

Too much light from your business, house, flashlight, or car will cause hatchlings to move toward the light and away from the sea.  The more time the hatchlings spend on land the greater the chance of them getting eaten by mongoose, crabs, dogs, cats and birds.  Sometimes lights will attract the hatchling to a road where cars run over them.

DID YOU KNOW??

When Sea Turtles come to nest on a beach, they will swim along the shore at the surface, looking for a good nesting spot before emerging from the water.  If you are traveling in a boat close to shore, please go slowly and watch for turtles.

DID YOU KNOW??

Sea Turtles breathe air and if they are caught in fishing line or in a net, they will drown?  Monofilament fishing line takes over 600 years to biodegrade.

Please pick up any stray fishing line, gear or other trash you find in the water or on the beach, it may just save a turtle’s life!!!

Leatherback sea turtles eat jellyfish.  They can easily mistake a plastic bag for a jellyfish.  If they swallow it, they can suffocate, or starve to death.
